Cyber Terrorism at 2012 Summer Olympic Games Remains a Major Threat

michael2 mins

As Mobile Marketing Watch reported earlier Thursday, social media will play a significant role during the 2012 summer Olympic games.

With the Olympics entering the digital age in full this summer, new concerns are growing that the Olympics could be a huge target for hackers and cybercriminals.

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube could be the biggest targets for the devious digital dwellers who seek to disrupt communications and impair the globe’s enjoyment of the sporting spectacle.

“Social media will be a major vehicle for Olympics-related fraud this year,” Angel Grant, senior manager at anti-fraud solutions company RSA, tells Mashable in a new interview. “Thousands of people already follow the games via social channels, and fraudsters worldwide are eager to leverage the interest around the Olympics to launch cyber attacks with the goal of stealing personal information.”

So what can you do to limit your exposure to hack attacks and other cyber threats? For starters, be careful about what you click on.

“Avoid directly responding to email alerts that appear to come from Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites and even your bank,” Grant warns. “Instead, go directly to these sites by typing their URLs directly into your browser or using a browser bookmark.”
